The Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) joins the Filipino people in welcoming Pope Francis to the Philippines. The Papal visit is a much needed boost at these most difficult times to uplift hope and courage especially for all the survivors of tragedies and victims of human rights violations.  Equally important to this visit is for Pope Francis to witness the plights of the poor, oppressed and the exploited Filipino masses.

As a symbol of peace and justice, families and peoples’ organizations across the nation, seek and write Pope Francis to support the peoples’ call for the release of political prisoners; justice for all victims of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture; and the welfare of women and children.

In the region, CPA as the broadest people’s organization, specifically seek Pope Francis to hear the issues of indigenous peoples of development aggressions and violations of indigenous people’s rights. Pope Francis is seen by many as a “progressive and radical” pope who is not afraid to voice out his concern about the current state of inequality and poverty across the nations, and journey with us to take action in changing this.

CPA fully agrees to the core values of the Papal visit of mercy and compassion. As Christians, these are our obligation. We should give life to these core values. Let us transform mercy and compassion into action, condemn poverty, inequality and uphold genuine peace and justice. ***
